Overview
This is a project I had wanted to do for a long time. I had some basic experience with servers before, but that was mostly running an OS on an old desktop and using it as a media server. This time I wanted to go bigger and harder. It will probably stay an ongoing project, because there is a lot to try and learn here, haha.
The first goal of the server is to replace my old media server. The other goals are to run my own drive and other services on it, easily and securely. I also want good insight into everything that is going on, and layers of security around everything, so that, for example, an attack on one service cannot affect my network or the other services.
Principles
The homelab is built around a few core principles:
- Everything runs locally
- Privacy
- Security
- Control over all data and services
Setup & Architecture
For isolation and insight, everything runs on top of a virtualization layer:
- Hypervisor: Proxmox VE
- Storage: TrueNAS, running as a virtual machine, manages the physical hard drives.
- Services: All applications and tools run inside dedicated virtual machines.
